Travel Tips

  • Dogs from the U.S. that are at least three months old need signed and dated certificates from a licensed veterinarian verifying that they have been vaccinated against rabies within the last three years. The certificate must clearly identify the animal. If your dogs or cats are less than three months old, you do not need a certificate of rabies vaccination - however, the animals must be in good health when they arrive. Assistance dogs that are certified as guide, hearing or other service dog are not subject to any restrictions for importation where the person importing the dog is the user of the dog and accompanies the dog to Canada. (Canada Border Services).
Collar tags are not sufficient proof of immunization. The certificate also is needed to bring a pet back into the United States; make sure the vaccination doesn’t expire while you’re in Canada

Pet dogs arriving from a country officially recognized free of rabies does not have to be vaccinated against rabies. Veterinary certificate of origin identifying the animal also stating that rabies has not occurred in the past six months and that the animal has been in that country for the previous six months.
  • Have your dog wear identification at all times. Your dog's I.D. tags should include your name, address, and phone number. Have your dog's rabies tag plainly visibly too. Pack a recent photo of your dog too!
  • Keep your dog cool while traveling in the summer months and bring along a water and a bowl for your trip
  • Bring along your dog's favourite bed or blanket
  • Consult your vet to ensure your dog is in good physical health before you travel and if motion sickness
is a concern, ask your vet about Dramamine or any other medication before administering to your dog.
  • Car sickness: Commonly used medications to help reduce the nausea associated with motion sickness include diphenhydramine (Benadryl®), and dimenhydrinate (Dramamine®). These medications are available without a prescription but should never be used unless specifically recommended by a veterinarian to ensure correct dosage
